仕事で北京に頻繁に出張し、長安街沿いのホテルに数十軒も宿泊してきた私は、清潔さに関しては非常にこだわりが強く、「細部にまで気を配る」と言っても過言ではありません。長期出張では、清潔で安心できる部屋で眠ることが何よりも重要だからです。今回は、金融街での長期プロジェクトのためにMin Zu Hotel Beijingを選びました。当初は、国営ホテルとしての長年の実績に惹かれたからです。しかし、5日間滞在してみて、このホテルの清潔さは、長安街の老舗ホテルに対する私の先入観を完全に覆すものでした。
チェックインの際、フロントのスタッフは、全室が「国営基準である1人1回の消毒」を厳守していると丁寧に説明し、もし何か特別な清掃の要望があればいつでもフロントに電話すれば、10分以内にスタッフが対応してくれると冗談交じりに言ってくれました。ドアを開けた瞬間、私は衝撃を受けました。古くて歴史のあるホテルによくあるカビ臭さは全くなく、消毒液とジャスミンの爽やかな香りが漂っていた。長年敷かれているはずの廊下のウールカーペットも、汚れや湿気の痕跡もなく、一点の曇りもない。足触りは柔らかく心地よく、目に見えない埃を気にする必要もなかった。
出張時に必ず持ち歩く携帯用検査ライトを取り出し、部屋を見渡した。多くのビジネスホテルでは汚れが目立ちがちな隅々まで、ピカピカだった。バスルームの大理石の鏡は完全に乾いており、シャワー室の目地は真っ白で、便座と便器の台座には黄ばみ一つなく、洗面台の排水口には髪の毛一本も詰まっておらず、ドライヤーの排気口にも埃一つなかった。寝具は乾ききっていてふかふかで、枕にも嫌な臭いはなかった。シーツをめくってマットレスを確認したが、髪の毛一本も見当たらなかった。これらは、私がこれまで宿泊した多くの五つ星ビジネスホテルでさえ実現できていない細やかな配慮です。
最も驚いたのは、見落とされがちな細部へのこだわりでした。窓際のエアコンの吹き出し口はピカピカで、吹き出す空気は全く無臭でした。大きなビジネスデスクの隅々まで磨き上げられ、コーヒーの染み一つありませんでした。クローゼットの中の予備の毛布や枕はすべてきちんとダストバッグに密封されており、取り出してもカビ臭さは全くありませんでした。ある時、書類を取りに早めに部屋に戻ったところ、清掃係の女性が掃除をしているところに出くわしました。彼女は色違いの布を使って、机、カウンター、バスルームをそれぞれ別々に拭いていました。トイレを拭いた布は洗面台には一切触れていませんでした。床は一方向に二度モップがけをし、最後に乾いた布で巾木についた水染みを拭き取っていました。
共用エリアの清潔さも同様に安心感を与えてくれました。朝食レストランのテーブルは、お客様が退席されるたびにすぐに拭き上げられ、消毒されていました。食事受け取りエリアのトレイはどれも消毒されたばかりでまだ温かく、エレベーターのボタンの横には無料の除菌シートが置いてあり、すぐに使えるようになっていました。滞在中、北京では砂嵐が発生しましたが、ホテル側は積極的にスタッフを手配し、出張用のジャケットを無料で部屋まで来て埃を払ってくれました。自宅で自分でやるよりもずっと綺麗にしてくれました。
以前は、長安街の古いホテルは築年数が経っているため、どうしても清潔さが損なわれているものだと思っていましたが、Min Zu Hotel Beijingに宿泊してみて、真の清潔さとは表面的な見た目ではなく、目に見えない細部にまで気を配ることだと気づきました。次回北京の金融街へ出張する際は、必ずまたこのホテルを予約します。清潔で快適な客室は、出張の疲れを大幅に軽減してくれます。
長安街で味わう、古き良き北京の豊かで不朽の魅力
北京旅行中、古き良き北京のエッセンスを感じさせる場所を探していました。友人がMin Zu Hotel Beijingを勧めてくれたのですが、長安街沿いに建つ築70年近い老舗で、窓からは西単の街並みが一望でき、そよ風さえも古き良き北京の歴史を感じさせる、とのことでした。復興門駅を出てスーツケースを引きずりながら見上げると、見慣れたベージュ色の民祖ホテルの本館が目に飛び込んできました。まさに長安街ならではの、独特の静謐な雰囲気を肌で感じました。
復興門駅（地下鉄1号線・2号線）から徒歩わずか3分。地下鉄の出口をぐるぐる回る必要もなく、長安街の歩道を少し歩くだけでホテルの入り口に到着します。フロントのスタッフは、持ち前の温かさとホスピタリティで、チェックイン時に私を温かく迎えてくれました。北京観光中の観光客だと知ると、街の景色が見える高層階の部屋を用意してくれたのです。さらに、あまり人が通らない散策ルートまで教えてくれました。長安街西側を天安門広場方面へ歩けば、胡同に隠れた名所がたくさん見つかると教えてくれたのです。人気の観光スポットに群がるよりもずっと面白い体験ができるとのことでした。ドアを開けた瞬間、私は息を呑みました。床から天井まで続く大きな窓からは、長安街の交通と遠くに見える西単のショッピング街が一望できました。窓際のコーヒーテーブルには、ホテル自慢の八宝茶がすでに用意されており、その温かい香りが旅の疲れをたちまち癒してくれました。
そして何よりも驚いたのは、ホテルの随所にさりげなく歴史を感じさせる工夫が凝らされていたことです。ロビーの古いシャンデリアは温かい光を放ち、壁に飾られた古い写真はホテルの数十年にわたる歴史を物語り、廊下のカーペットの模様さえも、多くの新しいホテルに見られるようなけばけばしさとは無縁の、前世紀を彷彿とさせる優雅な魅力を醸し出していた。翌朝、ホテルの通路を散歩していると、北京での思い出話に花を咲かせている長年の宿泊客にたくさん出会った。私たちは数十年前の民祖ホテルでの初めての滞在について語り合い、笑い合った。その場の空気さえも、地に足の着いた心地よさを漂わせているように感じられた。部屋は実に素晴らしいデザインで、マットレスはちょうど良い硬さで、長い一日の後、体の痛みはすぐに消え去った。防音性能は私の期待をはるかに上回っており、下の長安街を車が行き交う音さえも、ドアを閉めればぐっすり眠ることができた。
立地も非常に便利だった。ホテルから徒歩5分で西単のショッピング街に到着。急ぐ必要は全くなかった。スリッパを履いて、昔ながらのデパートや個性的な書店をぶらぶらと見て回ることができました。10分ほど歩けば金融街に出ます。そこには昔ながらの胡同が立ち並び、本場の北京の軽食が軒を連ねていました。流行のレストランを探しに街の反対側まで行く必要はありません。すぐ下の階で、本格的な豚の内臓煮込みや揚げパンが味わえるのです。遠くまで出かけたくない日は、ホテルの窓際のティーテーブルで午後を過ごし、ジャスミン茶と豆粉の餅を注文し、外をゆっくりと流れる長安街の車を眺めていました。まるで時間がゆっくりと流れているように感じました。
この老舗ホテルでの食事は、格別に本格的でした。朝食ビュッフェには、発酵豆腐、揚げパン、蒸したての肉巻きなど、本場の北京料理が並びました。少数民族の軽食も豊富に用意されていました。これは民族料理店の伝統であり、遠くまで足を運ばなくても、様々な民族の本格的な味を体験できるというものです。夕方、長安街を散策した後、ホテルに戻り、レストランで丹家の本格的な料理を小皿で味わうことができました。大人数で食事をする必要もなく、昔ながらの北京の宴会料理の味を堪能できたのです。
3日間の北京旅行の終わり、スーツケースを手にホテルを後にする時、近くの老舗で買ったばかりの「北京八宝」を手に持っていました。都心の混雑した流行のホテルとは違い、Min Zu Hotel Beijingの快適さは、長安街の日常の中にひっそりと佇む、深く安心できるものでした。次に北京の古都を訪れる時は、必ずこのホテルを選びます。急ぐ必要はありません。午後のひとときを長安街をのんびりと散策するだけで、古き良き北京を体験できるのです。
